Fall is the best time to get an aging asphalt roof ready for a Pennsylvania winter. Clear the debris, check the gutters and flashing, look for granule loss and curling, and address any real repairs before the cold. Why is a PA winter so hard on asphalt shingles?
Pennsylvania winters don't just get cold — they cycle. Daytime sun warms the roof, temperatures drop below freezing at night, and any moisture that has worked into a shingle expands as it freezes and contracts as it thaws. That constant freeze-thaw movement is brutal on shingles that have lost their flexibility. A supple shingle can absorb that expansion and contraction; a dried-out, brittle one cracks, and once the mat is exposed, the next thaw drives water where it doesn't belong.
That's why the shingles most at risk in winter are the ones that were already drying out in the fall. Cold weather doesn't create the brittleness — it exposes it. Going into winter with a flexible roof is a very different situation from going in with a stiff, chalky one.
What should be on my fall roof checklist?
Most of this you can do from the ground or with a look in the gutters — no need to walk the roof.
- Clear debris and clean the gutters. Leaves and grit trap water against the roof edge and block drainage, which sets up ice dams once temperatures drop. Clean gutters let melt-water run off instead of backing up under the shingles.

- Look for curling, cupping, or brittle edges. Lifted corners and curled edges are where winter wind and ice get their grip. Scan the lower edges and sunniest slopes first.
- Inspect flashing and seals. Around chimneys, vents, and valleys, worn or lifted flashing is a common winter leak point. This is a repair item, not a rejuvenation one.
- Trim overhanging branches. Limbs that rub or drop debris keep slopes damp and can do real damage under the weight of ice and snow.
- Note the roof's age. If it's a decade or older, assume drying-out is underway and worth a closer look before winter.
Why is fall a smart time to rejuvenate an aging roof?
