The Answer

Is Roof Rejuvenation a Scam?

A fair question deserves a fair answer. Here's ours, including the legitimate criticisms of the category.

No, roof rejuvenation is not a scam. It is a legitimate, lab-tested treatment for asphalt shingles that are worn but still intact. Bad actors exist in every trade, and the roof-rejuvenation category has produced some overstated claims that a skeptical homeowner is right to notice.

The Fair Criticisms

Before we defend the category, it is worth acknowledging what a skeptical homeowner is actually reacting to. Three criticisms are fair:

1. Some operators sell the treatment on roofs that should be replaced.

Rejuvenation is a treatment for aging-but-intact asphalt shingles. When it is applied to a roof that is already failing, leaking, badly cracked, or shedding to the mat, it does not do what it is designed to do, and the homeowner ends up paying for a service that solves nothing. That has happened, and it is a real problem in the category. The right response is to disqualify the roof at inspection, not to treat every roof a contractor visits.

2. Some make lifespan claims of 30 years or more that lab testing does not support.

You will occasionally see claims that rejuvenation “doubles the life of your roof,” adds “30 years,” or takes a shingle to “60+ years.” Independent lab testing does not support those figures. Lab work by PRI Asphalt Technologies shows that a bio-based rejuvenator measurably restores flexibility and reduced granule loss by approximately 53% on 15-year-old shingles. That is strong evidence the treatment does something real. It is not evidence for a specific decades-long lifespan on your particular roof, and no reputable contractor should present it that way.

3. Rejuvenation does not fix leaks, flashing, or missing shingles.

Rejuvenation restores shingles that are aging but still there. It is not a repair, not a coating, not a waterproofing system. If a roof has active leaks, damaged flashing, or missing or cracked shingles, no rejuvenation will fix that. And any contractor claiming otherwise is not being clear with you.

What separates a legitimate application from a bad one

Four things distinguish a defensible rejuvenation job from a category complaint waiting to happen:

  • A qualifying roof. Asphalt shingle, roughly 6-20 years old, aging but intact: not leaking, not cracked, not missing pieces. If the roof does not qualify, it does not get treated.
  • A lab-tested bio-based product with published test data. Not a marketing claim. Independent ASTM test data by a third party (PRI Asphalt Technologies) available for review.
  • A written, transferable warranty. Concrete terms in writing that back the work. Not a verbal promise or a marketing lifespan number.
  • Willingness to disqualify. A contractor who will walk your roof and tell you it's not a fit is protecting you from the exact scenario the criticism is about.

Is your roof even a candidate?

The criticism only matters if the treatment is being sold to a roof that does not qualify. A qualifying roof looks like this:

  • Asphalt shingle roofing (not metal, tile, slate, or flat).
  • Roughly 6 to 20 years old.
  • Dry, faded, or shedding granules. But shingles are still present and intact.
  • No active leaks; no missing, cracked, or badly curled shingles.
  • Structurally sound decking underneath.

If your roof matches that description, rejuvenation is doing exactly what it is designed to do: restoring flexibility, helping granules stay put, and buying real years for a fraction of what replacement costs. If your roof does not match, we will tell you at the inspection.

How we handle the criticism

The short answer is that we treat the fair criticism as our own operating policy. We disqualify roofs that should be replaced, and we say so. Our claims match what independent lab testing actually shows: restored flexibility and approximately 53% less granule loss on 15-year-old shingles. Our commitment is a written 5-year transferable warranty, not a decades-long lifespan promise. And we work with a first-of-its-kind, patent-pending corn-oil formula that is 95% USDA-certified bio-based and, in independent lab testing, outperformed the competing product on granule retention and cold-weather flexibility.

None of that makes rejuvenation the right answer for every roof. It makes it the right answer for the roofs it is designed for. And a free, no-pressure inspection is the only way to know which category your roof is in.
